Candida Yeast Infections

candida yeast infectionsCandida yeast infections can happen to the best of us. Candida yeast is naturally occurring yeast that lives in all of us. This yeast is found on our skin, in our digestive tracts, and (for women) in their vagina in copious amounts. Candida albicans is the most common form of yeast infection and can plague everyone from women to children, from men to the elderly.

Some types of yeast infections are vaginal, oral, and skin related. All have somewhat similar symptoms of itching, swelling, burning, redness, and the production of bumps and pain. These are the most common symptoms and they can vary in severity from person to person. One person may only experience redness while another person will experience all of the symptoms listed.

What causes candida yeast to take over our bodies? One culprit is antibiotics. Antibiotics kill off both good and bad bacteria that reside in our bodies.

Without these bacteria, our body’s natural defenses are taken away and yeast is able to take over. Birth control pills are another promoter of yeast cell growth. Estrogen levels are heightened while on birth control pills and yeast finds these conditions favorable for multiplication.

A final reason why yeast cells are able to take over is due to poor diet. People who eat high amounts of processed sugars and carbohydrates will experience frequent occurrences of yeast infections. Adopting a yeast-free, high fiber diet will help in decreasing the number of yeast infections one has.
